唐朝贞观九年利州都督武士镬得了一名千金取名武媚。14岁时的武媚娘（潘迎紫 饰）被召入宫中服侍太宗（梁修身 饰）更衣，与淡泊名利的九皇子晋王李治（樊日行 饰）日久生情。太子被废后，媚娘揭发四皇子李泰（丁华宠 饰）罪行使得李治当上太子顺利继承帝位，可是媚娘却不得不奉太宗遗诏，削发为尼进入感业寺修行，幸得智空和尚相助得以回宫。回宫后的媚娘与王皇后（陈佩伶 饰）和萧淑妃（龚莲华 饰）勾心斗角，使出浑身解数的媚娘终于被立为皇后。武后为竭尽心力辅佐朝政，招来旧相识程南英（许家荣 饰）与明学文（崔浩然 饰）为智囊，又请来胞姐贺兰夫人抚养孩子。李治身体日渐衰竭，与皇帝同时听政的武后渐渐忽略了丈夫和儿子，变得专横独断。在经历了儿子李贤谋反、废帝重立、徐敬业揭竿起义之后，武后终于自立为皇帝，同时也开始了众叛亲离的后半生。。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely.
